"History of the Type 4 and why Watercooled?"
| |
I like aircooled VW's, but was only into Type 3's (I had a Squareback and Fastback), but was always curious about the Type 4. Did the Type 4 flop or something? I've seen several of them around, and while you can get parts for the motors (because they ended up in the VW Bus at some point), god help you in finding any of the other parts for them. Also, why did VW go watercooled so quickly? Yes, I know that aircooled engines generally have higher emissions...but Porsche held out for quite a while before going watercooled, so why did VW jump the aircooled ship so fast?

<<but was always curious about the Type 4. Did the Type 4 flop or something?>> in a word...yes. in the US the type 4 flopped horribly. in south america they prospered for a while but then faded out. the bus was equiped with a type 4 engine sometime in the 70's(exact year has left me) but yah they were never too popular. <<Also, why did VW go watercooled so quickly?>> they needed a more powerful engine and as their air cooled equiped cars died out in the US they needed a change to attract new customers. |

" Was a horizontally opposed aircooled six out of the question? Or maybe a larger displacement horizontally opposed, aircooled four cyl? |

VW went watercooled because of the fact that they had just boughten a majority of DKW, and new management liked the idea of a water cooled front wheel drive car better than that of an air cooled rear engined one. Then they bought NSU, and because of this had the engineers and facilities to build new water cooled cars.
