"just picked up a 1975 (?) motobecane..."
| |
yesterday i picked up a ragged out motobecane, i think it's a 1975. i paid 25 bucks for it. the engine is siezed but hell, for 25 bucks you can't complain too much can you? anyway, it's my first moped, i've never owned, worked on, or ridden one before but i've been a long time admirer of them, so i don't really know where to begin. first of all, can anyone offer any info on motobecane? i've never heard of them before. where do you get parts for them? what replacement engines will work on it, and what kind of prices can they be had for? the tank looks to be integral to the frame, and unfortunately is rusty inside. is there any way to fix it? i'm thinking i can rig up some sort fo external tank or something (mini beer keg attached to the luggage rack? haha) i live in richmond virginia, is there anyone local who might be willing to take a look at it for me? thanks... 1974 Vespa 177 super 1963 Lambretta Li 125 1972 Honda CB500 |

You gotta get that engine unstuck first. Get some Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO). Remove the spark plug and pour a a couple of tablesppons of MMO into the cylinder. Let it set overnight then with the bike on the center stand and holding on the decompression lever (left handle bar i think) Push down hard on the pedal with your foot. Keep trying it may or my not unstick thIs way. If not add a little more MMO and get a wooden dowel slightly smaller than your spark in diameter and put it in the spark plug hole and tap the end of the dowel with a hammer. If you get it unstuck then go to Fred's Guide http://mopedarmy.com/resources/articles/fredsguide/ Good Luck |

it may have been soft siezed. pull the exhaust off and look up thru the exhaust port. with the spark plug removed, turn the engine over slowly by hand and look at the piston side wall as it moves up and down in the cylinder. any signs of deep scratches or smearing indicates a sieze. when you look at the rings thru the port, take a prick punch and push inward on them. if the move inward and spring back out, great. if not, do a compression test. if less than 120 lbs, pull the head and cylinder. donp Mow-Ped lawn mowers-bicycles-mopeds sales and service 1695 Sunview dr Lyndhurst, Ohio 44124
