"What kind of fuse???"

Hi there. My little cousin has an e-scooter which doesn't work.
After i had a quick look at it i noticed that there was no fuse at all.
The problem is that the manual doesnt really give any answers to what fuse i should use

I am not really into electric motors and the only information i have is what is writen on the charger and the few info the manual has in.

In the manual says :
Voltage 24v. DC
Batteries 2X12V 12AH/17AH
Motor 250W 300W 350W (Confusing isn't it?)
Rated speed 20KM/H
Distance per charge 25-40KM
Noise 60db
Weight 24KG - Capacity 100KG
Import Voltage 220V.DC
Battery charge 0.1-2A - Charging Time 6-8 Hours

Charger Info :
Model JY-100A
Output Current 1.6A
Input AC90-240V~50/60Hz for 24V lead-acid battery.

Hopefully someone can help on what fuse i am supposed to use with this or maybe suggest a way to find out.

Um, are you saying that you think you need to add one, or are you trying to replace a fuse in an empty fuse holder?

If the latter, you can't hurt anything by going small. For non-electronic circuits, a 1A fuse is pretty safe. If it pops immediatley, slow down and look for the short.

Is the fuse in the main power circuit or a control circuit? You can tell because main power circuits use bigger wire. If the motor is using 250W, it is drawing 10A, at 350W it is drawing 15A (+30%).

Yes sorry. I am trying to replace the one that was missing.

"look for the short" ?

I am not sure if its the main power or control circuit.
All i can tell is that the fuse holder is easily accesible from the outside of the scooter near the charging socket.
You unscrew a little plastic cap and push the fuse in the holder and screw the cap back back.

So you suggest to start from a 10A fuse and if it pops move to a bigger?

I dont want to take apart the scooter to see if it uses 250W or more unless its really necessary since i ll have to rip off some things that cover the screws.

Thanks for your responce by the way:)

OK, it sounds like it is a conventional "auto" type fuse holder for 1/4" fuses. (I was imagining an in-line fuse holder.)

I'm afraid that you _will_ have to unscrew some stuff if you want to be accurate in your diagnosis. A repaired scoot is going to have some screw covers ripped off.

The question is twofold:

1) What does the fuse protect? If it is protecting the main battery pack from melting, the fuse is going to be pretty big - I'd say 20A if you think the circuit might draw 15A. If it is protecting the control circuits, it will be much smaller - perhaps 2A or less.

To answer this question, I would start pulling body pieces, then trace the wires. Is there a direct connection to the battery, or is the fuseholder on a small-gauge wire that supplies control voltage?

At this level, electricity isn't very abstruse: power has to have a path from the + to the - of the battery through both the motor and the control (which is probably just a switch or relay).

2) Why is it missing? Offhand, I'd say there was a 90% chance it blew and the previous owner pulled it to match to a new one. So, where is the short? Again, body bits need to come off to look over the wiring for chafe or smoky parts. (My Suzuki lost its charging system after 20 years when a wire chafed through.)

Then there's always the off chace that someone with the same model will see this note, and can just TELL you what value to use...

What model number was on that manual?

   Some update in the progress.

I bought a dosen of 10A fuses and gave it a try.
It worked..for a bit.
As soon as i accelerate the fuse blows.
i tried 2 fuses and both had the same result, everything worked finely but as i fully accelerate for 2-3 seconds the fuse blows.

So i guess it needs a bit bigger fuse. 15A maybe?

I didnt manage to find a 15A fuse yet though.

1. I think the fuse protects the main battery since its next to it and the cables lead there.

2. Its missing coz my cousin took the scooter to the guy who bought it from (the guy has a gas station) to fix it since the fuse blew at some point and the smart guy there threw the old fuse away before checking the type and then he just didn't know what fuse to use.

The sneaky part is that the manual doesnt give any important information about the scooter except that the motor might be 250W,300W or 350W motor. and there is only one sticker that says PINGAN. I googled it but nothing came up so i am guessing its coming from someplace in asia (china maybe) and its made to look like a normal model from a serious manufacturing company.

   Great progress! Isn't this fun?

Well, if you are getting 2 seconds, your fuse rating is pretty close. Have another look for 20A fuses. Did you try Radio Shuck? These are the glass 1/4" x 1" type, right?

-or put in a second fuse holder beside #1, and parallel 2 @ 10A fuses.

-or fill it with aluminum foil. The motor will be the fuse.

Does it have a proportional throttle, or is there just a "go" button?

BTW, the sysadmin here thinks no one is interested in electrics (that's why this forum is invisible from the main page), but there's a pretty active electric scoot list at:
