"ET4 Oil Change?"

Can anyone help with a walk-through of an ET4 oil change? I have the workshop manual but the way it is written is a little confusing. I get that the oil drain plug is the large (24mm) gold colored nut near the exhaust and I'm pretty sure I've found the oil filter but I'm a bit confused as to the refill. Do I add the oil back through the hole where the dipstick is? Also, I've heard that there are two oil filters on an ET4, is this true? Where is the second?

Also, does anyone know where the drain is for the hub oil? And is it refilled through the dipstick or elsewhere?

I would be taking this to the local dealership and have them show me but I bought the bike out of town and the new local dealership won't have the service dept. open for another month.

Thank you for the help,
Eric

   The twelve-step process:

1. Remove the exhaust pipe (2 nuts on the flange, 2 bolts on the rear)

2. Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil.

3. Remove the oil filter and replace. (Run a bead of oil on the new rubber gasket so it will seal properly).

4. Reinstall oil drain plug.

5. Add a liter of oil though the dipstick. (I like Mobil 1 0-40w)

6. Remove the gear oil plug. (I fold a piece of cardboard to direct the oil to my oil collection pan)

7. Replace the gear oil plug.

8. Add 5cc of gear oil though the little plastic plug at the top of the rear hub. (I like Mobil 1 Gear Oil)

9. Reinstall exhaust.

10. Check all levels.

11. Note: This is a good time to install a better sparkplug. (I like Denso IU27 Iridium)

12. Go for a ride.

The second "filter" is the oil screen. You remove it with a pair of needle nose pliers. It's inside the drain when you remove the 24mm nut. Check it for metal shavings.

Thanks for the help. I am still a little confused about the location of the gear oil drain. According to the service manual it should be just below and slightly aft of the kick start but when I'm looking I only seem to be able to locate a standard bolt (marked AL 10.9) for holding the casing together. Is that it or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Eric

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong diagram. I think I've found the drain plug. Low end of the case on the wheel side near one of the brake line linkages?

I was also told to remove the exhaust and back wheel, I believe for changing the hub oil. However I have changed both the engine oil and hub oil with out having to remove the exhaust or wheel on the ET4.

Ya, some bikes have a little more room between the oil drain plug and the exhaust. So you can getaway with not moving it. However, as easy as it is to take the exhaust off, it sure give you allot more room to work. Valve adjustments I have done both ways. But, the engine and drive train takes about 5 min. to drop. It all just sits there on the center stand ready to work on. In this position, another 30min. and the Malossi kit is on. Cool...

In a perfect world I would have 2 engines and ride with one and work on the other. Sorry, got to buy my Lotto ticket....
