"Best Scooter for $500.00?"
I was planning on buying an electric scooter, but they don't seem to be very reliable.

Are there any decent scooters for around 500.00? This will only be ridden around fairgrounds, campgrounds, etc. while I'm at horse shows or camping.

It will NOT be on roads driving to work, the stores, etc.

the Schwinn Xcel is the best for what you are talking about. 15 mile range at 15 mph. I sell them for $379 and we also use them for shop transporters. They are great.

I couldn't tell for your original post if you would consider a gas scooter, but I would suggest looking for a used Honda Spree. For $500 you should be able to find a real nice one. I got a great one for $400, and I know people who got decent ones for less.

Even though it would be produced in the 80's, its very reliable, and extremely simple to work on. The two stroke motor will get you up to about 32 MPH max, which should be more than enough on the fairgrounds.

The best thing, however is the weight.... it's less than 100lbs, which makes it extremely easy to load on to pickup, or whatever you'll be using to get it around.

Thanks everyone! Right now I don't care if it's electric or gas; I just want something small and reliable.

Cute is good too, but you can't have everything.

A friend of mine can get me Schwinn at 10% over cost, but he hasn't been overly impressed with the reliability of even the Schwinn electric models.

Thanks for the link- I'm in Indianapolis. How did you know that?

This is probably one of the most difficult purchases I've ever made! So much junk on the market, I'm not sure which way to go...

Maybe I'll either buy a used gas scooter, or get a new Schwinn electric....sigh.....

Keep your eagle eye out for a lightly used bike on Ebay, something by Yamaha or Honda. Look for low mileage but not ancient -- I'd pass on anything brand new that cost that little... you'd be better to throw your money out the window.

Check out the Madass 50cc scooter. Its pretty cool looking. I imagine it would be perfect for what you want to do. I don't know what the price on this is going to be in the US but it comes out the end of this month supposedly.
