"Sputterin' Chetak"

Hi everyone. I'm pretty new to this board in general, though in my prior life I had a automatic scooter, so I have been kicking around on the new scooter board. Anyways, I thought I'd come here and ask for some help. I bought a new Bajaj Chetak a bit ago - it now has about 80 miles on her. Beginning yesterday, I noticed that it's sputtering on me a little. First, it was because I forgot to put the fuel on from the off position, pulled over, put it "on" and was on my way after a littlke more sputtering. That was yesterday. Today, I put the fuel on and headed out only to have her sputter a bit more, then die on me on an on ramp (fun times). I pulled over and put the fuel on reserve and tried again, it started and then I switched to the main fuel and it seemed ok after some sputtering. I stopped for a bit, then headed out again, but this time, turned the fuel lever a little past due south - as for "on" as it would go. It seemed fine. I guess my question is what gives? It is ok to have the fuel set to "on" as far as it goes even if it doesn't technically line up the the "on" marker? Do you think that is my problem? Id like to take the scooter on a decently long run on secondary roads this Saturday morning, and don't want to get stuck somewhere. Thank you very much for any help you can provide me.

Not to be a smart ass but did you check your tank?

Just turn it all the way open.

I've had the same problem several times, I sometimes take off with the fuel turned off and then reach down and turn it on while riding but don't quite get it all the way - sputters until I twist it to full open.

The Chetaks also sometimes suffer from fuel starvation at high rpms. But if you only have 80 miles on it, you shouldn't be at high rpms long enough for that to happen.

Sometimes it will vapor lock too. But you probably just need to make sure your petcock is all the way open.

Thanks everyone. Yep, checked the tank, looks pretty full. I will make sure the petcock is fully open and give it a shot - I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again for your help.

Just to close the loop sort of, I made sure the petcock was cranked all the way open and this seemed to solve the problem. A trouble-free ride to Annapolis from DC tomorrow should seal the deal. Thanks again.
